Are Google Local Services Ads worth it for HVAC, plumbing and electrical companies?
By Capital Growth Studio · Published · 6 min read
Often, if someone answers the phone. Here's how costs, credits and the move into Google Ads work.
For most licensed HVAC, plumbing and electrical companies that answer their phones, yes. Local Services Ads charge per lead, not per click, and Google screens advertisers first. They stop paying off when calls come outside your hours, or for jobs and areas you don't cover, because Google won't credit those leads. Judge them on your cost per booked job.
How do Local Services Ads charge you?
You pay for each valid lead. A lead counts when you answer a call and speak with the customer, get a voicemail, text, email or booking request, or return a missed call (Google Local Services Help, October 2026). Prices vary with your location, the job type, the lead type and your bidding. Message leads usually cost less than calls, but Google says that isn't always true.
You set an average weekly budget. A busy week can cost more, but a month never costs more than your weekly budget times the average number of weeks in a month.
What does a Local Services lead cost?
Google doesn't publish a price list. One recent sample comes from a vendor: SearchLight tracked 888 contractors' Local Services Ads in February 2026 (SearchLight benchmark, March 2026). These are one vendor's national figures, not prices for DC, Maryland or Virginia.
| Trade | Average cost per lead | Leads that booked a job |
|---|---|---|
| HVAC | $51 | 44.0% |
| Plumbing | $57 | 44.5% |
| Electrical | $39 | 43.4% |
| All trades in the sample | $53 | 43.9% |
The same vendor's January 2026 data put Google Search ads that didn't target a company's own name at $149 per lead. Those customers spent more, though: $2,516 on average, against $1,826 from Local Services Ads. So a cheaper lead doesn't settle it. Work out your cost per booked job, as in our guide to paid lead platforms, and ask every caller how they found you.
Which leads does Google credit, and which doesn't it?
There's no dispute form. Google checks each lead when the customer first gets in touch, and doesn't charge for leads it judges invalid or low quality. Its models recheck charged leads later and may credit them automatically, usually within 30 days (Google, October 2026). You can also rate a lead in Google's feedback survey, and Google says it may occasionally credit those.
Google won't credit these leads (Google):
- Leads for job types or areas you don't serve. Google "no longer supports credits" for them.
- Calls that arrive outside your business hours.
- Customers who wanted do-it-yourself advice, were only researching prices, or didn't answer your callback.
- Bookings the customer canceled.
So set your hours to the hours someone answers. Switch off every job type you don't do. Draw your service area around the towns your crews serve.
What does the Google Verified badge mean now?
It's the one badge for Local Services Ads. In August 2025, Google said that from October 2025, Google Verified would replace Google Guaranteed, Google Screened, License Verified by Google and the Money Back Guarantee (Google, August 2025). The badge shows which checks a business passed. If your website or ads still say "Google Guaranteed", update them.
To earn it, you pass Google's screening. Depending on your trade and state, that can include business and owner background checks, a business registration check, general and professional liability insurance, state licenses for the business and the owner, and a verified Google Business Profile. It takes three to four weeks on average after you send your documents (Google, October 2026), so start before your busy season.
Google checks licenses state by state, and notes that a business near a state border "may not be authorized to work in both states" (Google). Here, that means three systems:
- Virginia requires a master tradesman license as a condition of licensing HVAC, plumbing and electrical contractors (Code of Virginia § 54.1-1100).
- Maryland requires its own HVACR license, even if you hold another state's license and have no Maryland office (Maryland HVACR Board).
- DC licenses plumbers, electricians and refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics through its Board of Industrial Trades (DC DLCP).
A Fairfax company licensed only in Virginia should plan on Virginia-only ads until it holds Maryland and DC licenses.
When do Search ads beat Local Services Ads?
Search ads charge per click and don't need Local Services screening. You choose the keywords, write the ad and send the click to your own page, with your photos, licenses and form.
| Your situation | Start with |
|---|---|
| Licensed and insured, mostly repair and emergency calls | Local Services Ads, then add Search ads |
| Waiting on screening | Search ads while screening runs |
| Mostly commercial work | Search ads, after checking whether your job types exist in Local Services Ads |
| One high-value job, such as system replacements | Search ads, sent to a page about that job |
| No one free to answer calls | Fix staffing or hours first |

What changes as Local Services Ads move into Google Ads?
As of October 2026, Google is moving Local Services Ads into Google Ads as "Performance Max campaigns with pay-per-lead goals" (Google Ads Help, October 2026). You still pay per lead. The ads still show on Search and Maps in the same positions, with no keywords. The first phase began in August 2026 for some home service advertisers, including HVAC, plumbing and electrical. Service-area businesses without a storefront follow in late 2026, and remaining categories in 2027.
Google emails your account administrator 14 days before your migration date. Before then:
- Save your performance reports. They don't move to Google Ads, though your past leads do.
- Check the phone number your leads ring, and your ad schedule.
- Decide whether to split trades into separate campaigns. Manual bidding ends, and each campaign gets one target cost per lead (Google calls it target CPA).
- Pick at least six callouts, such as hours or payment methods. Better Business Bureau callouts end.
- Postpone business name or address changes on your Business Profile. A major change triggers a review of 24 to 48 hours, and your campaign may pause meanwhile.
Your weekly budget becomes a daily one, divided by seven, and monthly spend is capped at the daily budget times 30.4. Your Google Verified badge carries over. Allow up to two weeks for results to settle.
Frequently asked questions
Can I still dispute a Local Services Ads lead?
Not with a dispute form. Google credits low-quality leads automatically, usually within 30 days, and you can rate any lead in its feedback survey. Google no longer credits leads for job types or areas you don't serve, so keep both settings tight.
Will my Google Verified badge carry over to Google Ads?
Yes. Google says verified businesses keep their status and badge when their account moves to Google Ads. Insurance and license reverification are no longer required, but Google may ask for other business checks inside Google Ads.
