How much does a small business website cost in 2026?
By Capital Growth Studio · Published · 6 min read
Compare the three-year cost, not the launch price.
In GoodFirms' 2026 survey of web firms, most quote $1,000 to $3,000 for a basic small business website and $5,000 to $20,000 for a mid-sized one. Website builders cost $125 to $360 in year one, plus your time. Then budget for upkeep, which GoodFirms puts at 15% to 20% of the build cost a year, and compare quotes on the three-year total.
What do the 2026 surveys say a website costs?
Every source below is in the web business, so read these as ranges, not prices.
| Source | What it covers | What it found |
|---|---|---|
| GoodFirms, a directory of web firms, September 2026 | Survey of 300+ web development firms in 31 countries | Basic site: $1,000 to $3,000 for 59.9% of firms. Mid-sized site: $5,000 to $20,000 for 53.9%. US rates: $50 to $100 an hour. |
| 99creatix, a web design agency, August 2026 | Census of 34 providers that publish prices | US custom small business site: median $7,000 (6 providers, $4,000 to $18,000). Basic brochure site: median $799 (3 providers). |
| Same census | Six website builders | Year one: $125 to $360 on annual billing, before transaction fees and your time. |
The 99creatix samples are small, and its authors say providers that publish prices "skew toward productized and marketing-led shops." GoodFirms is global, so its ranges mix US studios with teams in South and Southeast Asia that bill $10 to $15 an hour.
Why do website cost guides disagree so much?
Mostly because the people who write them sell websites. The 99creatix census reviewed seven guides that rank for "how much does a website cost". They quoted $100 to $35,000 for a small business site. All seven publishers sell what they price, one claimed underlying data, and none showed a method. Its verdict: "the claimed cost of a website tracks what the publisher sells."
Averages mislead too. Clutch, a directory of agencies, says projects reviewed on its site "typically cost less than $10,000", yet gives an average of $66,499 (Clutch, August 2026). A few large projects pull the average up.
Most agencies publish no prices at all: 33 of the 42 top-listed agencies the census could check (78.6%). We don't either. We give a fixed, written quote after a call, so this guide uses other people's numbers.
How much does a website cost per month?
- Builder plans: $125 to $360 a year works out to about $10 to $30 a month. Four of the six builders in the census charge 2% to 10% on sales or payments, and a free domain lasts year one only, then costs $10 to $18 a year.
- Care plans for a site you own: the census's US median for a WordPress care plan was $89 a month, from three providers whose entry plans ran $49.99 to $147.
- Retainers for ongoing work: in GoodFirms' survey, 30% of firms charge $500 to $1,500 a month and 28% charge $1,500 to $3,000.
As a yardstick, GoodFirms suggests budgeting 15% to 20% of the build cost each year for hosting, security patches, software updates and small content changes.
What does a website cost over three years?
The build is one line. Hosting, the domain, upkeep, plugin or app licenses, transaction fees and your own time all add up. Here's the arithmetic for three setups, using the survey figures above. These are illustrations, not quotes.
| Setup | Three-year math | Three-year total |
|---|---|---|
| Website builder | $125 to $360 a year × 3, plus two domain renewals at $10 to $18 | About $400 to $1,100, plus your hours and any transaction fees |
| Custom site and care plan | $7,000 median build + 36 × $89 median care plan | About $10,200 plus the domain ($5,800 to $23,300 across the ranges) |
| Monthly subscription | Setup fee + 36 × monthly fee | A made-up example: $250 a month, no setup fee, is $9,000 |
The builder total assumes renewals cost the same as year one. That isn't guaranteed: the census found one platform whose headline price was a first-term promotion.
Is a monthly website subscription cheaper than buying one?
At first, yes. A subscription bundles the build, hosting and edits into one monthly fee, with little or nothing up front. The census found website subscriptions from $39 a month. But over three years, a mid-priced plan can cost about as much as an owned custom site with a care plan.
The bigger difference is what happens when you stop paying. If the provider holds the domain, or the site can't leave its platform, you're renting, and cancelling can mean starting over. Ask about the minimum term and the cancellation terms too. Our DIY or designer guide lists the ownership questions to ask any provider.
Why do websites cost more in DC, Maryland and Virginia?
None of the surveys publishes DC-area prices, so we can't give you a sourced local price. We can show local labor costs, which sit under every local quote. In BLS wage data for the Washington metro area (May 2025, released July 2026):
- All jobs averaged $44.20 an hour, against $33.54 nationally, about 32% more.
- Computer and mathematical jobs averaged $66.87, against $57.73, about 16% more.
- Arts, design, entertainment, sports and media jobs averaged $49.19, against $38.36, about 28% more.
A studio that pays local wages and rent will tend to quote above national medians. A remote team can cost less. A local studio can meet you in person and should know the local market. If you run an HVAC or contracting company, our website checklist for DC, MD and VA contractors covers what your site needs.
What are the red flags in a website quote?
- One total with no list of pages and features. GoodFirms advises asking for a phase-by-phase breakdown.
- No mention of content, SEO setup, third-party licenses or post-launch maintenance. GoodFirms names these as the four items most often left out of first quotes.
- Hourly billing with no estimate or cap.
- A large deposit with no milestones tied to work you can see.
- A monthly fee with no list of what it covers.
- No answer on who owns the domain, the code and the copy once you've paid.

Frequently asked questions
Does AI make a website cheaper in 2026?
For simple sites, yes. In GoodFirms' 2026 survey, 98% of web firms said they use AI, and most priced sites made with AI builders under $1,500. But firms said custom work and integrations have held their price or gone up. AI also can't supply your photos, service details or reviews.
Should I choose the cheapest website quote?
Only if it covers the same work. Line up each quote's pages, features, monthly fees and ownership terms, then compare three-year totals. A low build price with a high monthly fee, or a site you can't take with you, can cost more over time.
