Is Yelp advertising worth it for a small business? Yelp Ads Guide for Small Businesses
By Capital Growth Studio · Published · 5 min read
This article explains how Yelp ads work and what they cost. It also shows what a small business should set up before it pays for ads.
A Yelp page is the free page for your business on Yelp. Yelp Ads are paid ads in Yelp search results and on competitors' Yelp pages. Yelp charges for each click on an ad. A click is any action on an ad that connects a person to you. A tap and a quote request are examples.
Yelp Ads are worth it only if they bring booked jobs that earn more than the ads cost. A click is not a customer, so judge Yelp Ads on booked jobs. Before you pay, set up the channels that stay with you: your website, your Google Business Profile and its reviews.

What does a free Yelp page give you?
As of October 2026, the Yelp page has more than 20 free features. They include quote requests and replies to reviews and messages.
Yelp's guide to Yelp Ads says that an ad click takes people to your Yelp page (Yelp, December 2020). So complete the free page before you pay for ads. Add your hours, services, photos and a link to your website.
How do Yelp ads work, and what do they cost?
As of October 2026, Yelp sells two paid products:
- Yelp Ads: ads in "Sponsored Results" above and below search results, and on competitors' pages. Yelp says that you can spend "as little as $5 a day on average." Self-serve advertisers sign no term contract.
- Page upgrades: a logo, a photo slideshow, a call-to-action button and no competitor ads on your page. The Upgrade Package has a standard price of $6 per day on average, after a 14-day free trial.
The price of a click changes with competition, ad inventory and consumer interest. So daily spend is uneven. Yelp's example is $5 one day and $7 on another day. As of October 2026, Yelp does not charge more than the monthly budget that you set.
A tap on the ad is a paid click, even if the person does not call.
What do Yelp ads not give you?
With Yelp Ads, you rent attention on Yelp. The ads have these limits:
- The leads stop when you stop paying. Cost-per-click ads end at once when you cancel.
- The visit stays on Yelp. An ad click opens your Yelp page, not your website. Without the Upgrade Package, other businesses can show ads on your Yelp page.
- Yelp's lead count is not your lead count. Yelp's Leads figure adds up phone calls, website visits and other actions on Yelp. A website visit is not an inquiry.
- A term contract has exit rules. Yelp's terms require 30 days' written notice for a purchase order without its own termination process. A commitment period may also carry an early termination fee.
So count the forms, messages and quote requests yourself. Then count the jobs that they book, as in our guide to paid lead platforms. Read your purchase order before you sign, because this article is general information, not legal advice.
What should you set up first?
Start with three channels that stay with you, whatever you spend on ads:
- Your Google Business Profile. As of October 2026, complete and accurate profiles are more likely to show in Google's local results. No business can request or pay for a better local ranking on Google.
- Your Google reviews. More reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking on Google. Ask every customer the same way, soon after the job. Yelp does not permit this for Yelp reviews.
- Your own website. It is the one place where you control every detail. Link to it from your Yelp page and your Google Business Profile.
Then compare the cost per booked job of each channel, for example Yelp Ads, Nextdoor ads and local SEO. Keep the channels that book jobs at a profit.
Frequently asked questions
Does advertising on Yelp change my reviews?
Yelp says no. Its recommendation software treats reviews of advertisers and non-advertisers the same. Yelp also says that starting, stopping or declining ads has no connection with which reviews it recommends.
Can I ask customers to review my business on Yelp?
No. As of October 2026, Yelp does not permit a business to ask customers for Yelp reviews, with or without ads. Its software is likely not to recommend solicited reviews. Asking may also harm your placement in Yelp search results.
Can I pause Yelp ads instead of canceling?
Yes, if you have no term contract. Yelp asks for a date when the ads restart automatically. You can restart them before that date. On a term contract, you call Yelp's Customer Success team.
